Our village of Effingham in Surrey has a long and fascinating history – events that have taken place here and the characters involved in them become ever more astonishing the more we learn about them.
Effingham appears in Domesday Book of as Epingeham. It was held by Osuuold (Oswald) from Chertsey Abbey and Richard Fitz Gilbert. Its domesday assets were: 4½ ploughs, 5 acres ( ha) of meadow, herbage and pannage worth 18 hogs. It rendered £ct: Guildford.
